Eating Rocks and Other Fun Outside Things

June 3, 2009

It is now 9:30 pm and 27 degrees Celcius here in the Northern capital. The sidewalks are turning to porridge but there is still snow bordering the Yukon River, wouldn’t-you-know-it.

Now that the weather has turned, James has taken a keen interest in the great outdoors. Our yard is not fully fenced which means I can’t just let him run loose while I go play bingo. Because this is what would happen:

First, he would eat rocks. Next, he would throw himself down our cement stairs. Then, he would toddle out into traffic to find more rocks to eat. And I just wouldn’t be able to concentrate on my bingo game thinking about all the germs that are probably on those rocks.

A stake and tether you say? Now there’s an idea…

In the meantime we shall settle for sidewalk meanderings with large and dangerous sticks:

well I am really glad to hear that they are all on track with one another, that is what Lachlan does for every outing down here, get rocks (which he now understands he shouldn’t eat….as long as he knows someone is watching). Then he throws the rock on the ground, promptly picks it up and repeats. When the rock has lost it’s appeal we move onto similar activities but with sticks, and of course, running with said sticks! Oh the wonderful times with a 14 month old!

Seeing this picture brings back memories of when JD was about 3 and we were all visiting Lewiston New York with our friends morley lockhart and his friend Irene. JD was carrying a stick just like james and came across a couple of bigger boys who started to pick on him. JD looked around for backing from morley and I ans seeing his back was covered decided to offer a peace token in the form of the stick he was carrying. It was something I’ll always remember and kind of reminds me of the way OBAMA is talking and acting, carry a big stick but offer a quiet peace. Love GGF
