Permanent Couch Surfers

September 5, 2011

Without the help of my uterus, our household has once again expanded. Amanda, a friend from our university days, and her dog Tanzilla, are permanent couch surfers now. Amanda is a French and fine arts teacher at an elementary school here in Whitehorse. She is living with us because 1)there is no where else to live in Whitehorse and 2) she watched me bungee jump off a bridge on my 19th birthday and was curious about the parenting style of that sort of person. I shall refer her to Flight of the Nighthawk.

Before she moved up here, we made vague references to the obnoxious levels of noise that a three year old and a baby can produce. Thankfully she has just come from a year of teaching kindergarten. James and Jasper can often simulate the anarchy of twenty six kindergarten students.

Amanda is teaching James a little bit of French. His response varies when she says something to him in French. Sometimes he curls up into the fetal position and growls. Sometimes he laughs hysterically. Sometimes he stares blankly. And sometimes he shows interest and makes an effort to repeat what she’s said. Sometimes. So far he can say “Hello”, “Goodbye” and “You are a peanut.” He thinks he’s fluent.

James is allergic to Tanzilla but only if he grabs a handful of dog hair and rubs it into his eyes (which he is wont to do.) But Tanzilla is basically the perfect dog for James, because as you may recall, this is how James feels about most dogs who show any interest in him:

Tanzilla doesn’t give a toot about James which means James can “play” with the dog, without the dog invading his personal space and salivating and/or urinating on him, as the case may be.

James also likes to have someone he can boss around that actually understands when he’s being bossed around.

hey Claire and JD, just reading this with our breakfast (Aylah and Phil) and wanted to let you know Aylah waved and said hi a thousand times when the picture of James came up. I won’t spoil the special-ness of that moment by mentioning she likes to say hi to pretty much any picture of any person…But i’m pretty sure she recognized him! Nice to see Amanda too. We should have a skype sometime soon…email me about when’s a good time for you guys, it would be great to see you all and have a chat.

…hey, weren’t you also there when I jumped off the bridge?

We should definitely skype. We recently upgraded our internet package from “dial up’s slow cousin” to “dial up’s twin sister” so we should be good to go.
