James Can’t Wait to Turn Seven

December 23, 2011

J.D. went on a special father-son outing with James this morning. They went sledding, to the library and, of course, the liquor store. One of J.D.’s purchases came with a miniature bottle of gin. J.D. emptied it into our larger bottle of gin and James later found the empty mini-bottle lying around waiting to be included in his imaginative play.

James: Mum, I’m going to pretend to be an adult.

Me: What are you going to do?

James: I’m going to drink some wine. (In a conspiratorial tone) Do you know what wine has in it? Alcohol. That’s what Dad said.

Me: He did, did he. Hey James, how old do you have to be to be an adult?

James: Seven.

James: Mum, I’m going to pretend to be Grandpa (taking a generous swig straight from his ‘wine’ bottle.)

Me: Is Grandpa at a Christmas party?
