Weekend Recap

October 15, 2012

On Friday at noon, J.D. got an email invite to go moose hunting over the weekend. The party was leaving that evening around six. J.D. considered that his birthday was on Saturday. He spent the remainder of his lunch hour weighing the opportunity to have a lovely day at home with his family eating birthday pie with the opportunity to wander in the bush with a gun and sleep in the snow. Naturally, he went hunting.

They were supposed to be home sometime on Sunday but J.D showed up on our doorstep Saturday night all soggy and moose-less. The motor on the boat wouldn’t start so they decided to call it. One of his hunting mates reminded J.D. that they did spend part of his birthday laying on the beach. There may have even been sand under all that snow.

Meanwhile, back at the homestead, Jasper was telling everyone who would listen that “DADA. MOOOSE. SHOOT.” At one point he embellished the story a little. “DADA. MOOSE. SHOOT. CANNONBAAAAALL!”

Also, a birthday pie was made and not without passion.

Come Jasper. As the Best Brother in the Universe, I will show you how to make delicious, flaky pastry.

Um. That is not what we call “proper technique”. Please don’t get creative on me.

OKAY. Why don’t you just watch. No fork for you.

MY GOD YOU HAVE IMPALED THE BUTTER?!?

ALL PIES EVER HAVE BEEN RUINED BECAUSE OF YOU!

Thankfully James’ bout of rage and anguish only lasted until I convinced him to draw a calming dinosaur.

We celebrated J.D.’s birthday on Sunday with a pecan pie that turned out to be delicious according to some and borderline acceptable to others. We gave him a lunch kit that James designed and stenciled himself.

Here is the Birthday Dad and his boys:

Happy belated birthday. Sorry your birthday moose escaped, but I’m sure fabulous pecan pie and birthday boy hugs more than made up for the loss.

You could create this blog into an illustrated children’s book, Claire…it’s a wonderful story!

(I’m happy the moose hunting expedition was fun and somewhat eventful…but just a tad bit relieved it was unsuccessful…s-o-r-r-y-y-y-y, JD!)

PS: That’s a great picture of you and the boys!
